CHILDREN OF THE YAM: A HANDBOOK FOR RADICAL BLACK HEALING (2020)

E-Book

Children of the Yam is a self-help handbook that centres the experiences, needs, and wellbeing of Black people today. Guided by the belief that healing is a form of resistance, the book offers tools, ideas, and reflections to help readers navigate the ongoing racial trauma and systemic pressures that shape daily life.

Inspired by bell hooks’ Sisters of the Yam, the handbook draws from the wisdom of radical Black activists, thinkers, and theorists—both contemporary and historical. Written largely in the second person, its tone does not prescribe a single “right” way to live or heal, but instead empowers readers to design their own methods of care, responding to their individual needs and circumstances.

By centring Black experiences and perspectives, Children of the Yam positions self-care and wellbeing as acts of agency and resistance, offering a framework for reflection, resilience, and radical healing.
